ARG LAB
The Arg Lab, directed by Dr. Collin F. Lynch, is focused on developing innovative and effective educational interventions and educational data mining; on deploying those technologies to support students, educators, and educational institutions in rich complex domains such as Argumentation, software development, and design; and on analyzing the real-world impact of those technologies to develop appropriate policies that enhance their utility while safeguarding the rights of students, educators, and communities. The lab studies rich graph-mining techniques to handle heterogeneous relational data; text mining for the extraction of argument structures; and social network analysis for online learning.
Writing Observer
Damilola Babalola, Caleb Scott, Zhikai Gao & Yiqiao Xu
This project is collaborative work with the Educational Testing Service. The goal of this work is to develop teacher-facing dashboards to track, monitor, and evaluate student writing processes. These dashboards will in turn support classroom orchestration, automated evaluation, and process guidance.
Concert
Niki Gitinabard & Yiqiao Xu
The goal of this project is to develop Concert, an adaptive platform to support automated guidance, integration, and help-seeking in blended STEM courses.
FLECKS
Jennifer Tsan & Adam Gaweda
The goal of this project is to support upper elementary students collaborating in a computer science context using intelligent virtual learning companions.
Augmented Graph Grammars
Linting Xue
Augmented Graph Grammars (AGG) is a robust formalism for graph rules that provides a natural structure for evaluating complex heterogeneous graph data.
Argumentation Mining
Linting Xue
Automatically identify argumentation structure in student-produced persuasive essays.
Social Networks in Education
Niki Gitainabard, Yiqiao Xu
Defining social networks among students in online or on-campus classes, using them as well as machine learning methods to enhance learning.
Computer Science Exercises
Adam Gaweda
Analyzing the effectiveness of Computer Science exercises for the purpose of teaching CS concepts.
Public Policy
Collin Lynch
Public Policy in Educational Data Mining: Norms, Risks, Rewards, and Safeguards.
