E-Mail

As part of the GoT project, you will be given an e-mail account on the GoT server ontrack.ncsu.edu. In order to use this e-mail account, you will have two options

Access via Web

  1. It is assumed that you have access to the Internet either via your internet service provider (ISP), e.g., BellSouth, or that you are accessing the internet from a terminal or a workstation at Meredith College, NC State University, or one of the GoT affiliated organizations. If you do not have internet access, you should contact your site networking administrator, or you should acquire phone-based access via an ISP.
  2. It is assumed that your computer is either a PC (running Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT4.0), or a Macintosh, or a Unix workstation.
  3. It is assumed that the machine has installed on it Netscape Communicator (4.05 or later is preferable), that is a version that supports the e-mail via the "Messenger". Netscape is free. If you do not have it, or your version is not complete, please download the full version (latest is 4.61) and install it on your computer. Internet Explorer should work as well, but we will not support it in this project.
  4. It is assumed that the GoT E-Mail contact has given you your user-id and password.

  5. Setting up the Netscape Messenger Options
    1. Go to Edit Menu -> Chose "Preferences" - "Preferences" window should pop up
    2. Click on the the "Mail & Newsgroups "Preference" [+] entry so that it changes into [-] entry and shows its submenu.

  7. To send e-mail, press on "New Msg" - "Composition" window will pop-up. Type-in address of the recepient (To: field), Subject, and text. You can "Attach" files, check yur spelling, etc. Press "Send" to send the message. If you receive an error message (such as "relay-ing not allowed"). you have probably overstepped security boundaries, or have an incorrect destination address, and you may not be able to send the message out. Consult a GoT E-Mail co-ordinator.
  8. To receive e-mail, press on "Get Msg". The first time you do that, "Password Entry Dialog" will pop-up. Enter your password and press "OK". If all is well, the system will login onto the server and downlad your mail. Click on the mail entries to open them. If all is not well, the browser may ask you for the correct password, or may complain in some other way. If in doubt, please consult a GoT E-Mail coordinator.

WARNING: the browser remembers the password for the duration of its session (or until your exit COMPLETELY from it). You should not leave the browser running on your machine when you are not next to it. It is a major security risk. You could lose all your mail, or worse. Please close down the browser COMPLETELY (exit), when you are not using it, or if you leave your desk/station. Thank you.
