Making Web Pages

- by Tiffany Barnes

Open your page

  1. In the Location window, type http://research.csc.ncsu.edu/ontrack/~xxxx/index.html where xxxx is your User ID. (Your User ID will be given to you.)
  2. Click on File at the top left of the page. Select Edit Page.
  3. Now there are two windows open: Netscape and Composer. In the Composer window, there is a blinking cursor. This is where you will edit your page.
  4. You may edit your page as you would any text document.

Save & preview

Save your file often to disk or computer so you won't lose your changes. To preview your page as it will appear on Netscape, click on the Browse button on the top tool bar, or select Browse Page from the File menu. You must upload your page for others to see your changes. Instructions for this are on your Uploading Pages handout.

Backgrounds

  1. Select Page Color and Background under the Format menu.
  2. Click on the button next to the word Background and choose a color.
  3. If you would also like a graphic in the background, click on Use Image under Background Image Type in a URL or filename for your image.
  4. Remember that your text will be hard to read if your background is too complicated. Make sure that the text and link colors show up well.
  5. Click OK.

Making Links

  1. Click on the Link button on the top tool bar.
  2. Type in some descriptive text about the link in the Link source area.
  3. Enter the link URL in the Link to: area. Make sure that the address starts with "http://" unless it is one of your pages. Here are some example web pages you can link to:
  4. Click OK.

Downloading Pictures

To download a picture from the web, press the RIGHT mouse button and HOLD IT DOWN. Select Save Image As... on the menu that appears. Enter a filename and a location to save the file. The easiest place to save is on your disk in the A: drive.

Making links with pictures

  1. Click on the image and then on the Image button on the top toolbar.
  2. Choose the image you wish to insert.
  3. Click on the Link Tab at the top of the Image Properties window.
  4. Enter the link text and location just like you would for a regular link.
  5. Click OK.

Content

Your page should include: your name and email address, a link, and a second page. To make a second page, open a new file with composer, and save it with a name other than index.html (such as page2.html). Be sure to include a link to your new page from your home page.

Be sure to save your page when you're done and...

HAVE FUN!
